Notice I have enabled two-factor authentication for my account. I have started using OAuth credentials for terminal logins, so I can continue to use old housekeeping and uploading scripts. After a recent village pump discussion on Biodiversity Heritage Library duplicate files, the batch upload will continue but I shall be spending some time researching how to map the BHL uploaded jpeg files to their zipped/archived JP2 equivalent pages. If this is possible, then lossless PNG equivalents can be generated or significantly higher quality jpeg versions created than are available from BHL. Keep an eye on User:Fæ/Project list/Biodiversity Heritage Library for the results of investigation in a few weeks some months. 11:57, 30 October 2015 (UTC)

Faebot diffusion of PD-USGov[edit]

Pywikibot code for Faebot's diffusion job can be read at https://github.com/faebug/batchuploads/blob/master/relicense_PD-USGov.py

This is now a regular diffusion job for Faebot, currently once a day on a local machine so reliant on home broadband and my mac desktop staying on; originally requested at Commons:Bots/Work_requests#PD-USGov_Diffusion_Bot. The task is to wildcard search in Category:PD US Government for something suitable to match to more specific licenses. Searches rely on the standard search engine, so can use regex patterns as well as any other features of CirrusSearch.

  • Matches to 'Office for Emergency Management' go to PD-USGov-Treasury as the Treasury were liquidators for the OEM and so legally would become the copyright holders, in theory a valid alternative could be a POTUS license as managerially the OEM was a sub-office, refer to Office for Emergency Management.

Faebot is making diffusion errors when it relies on the mention of government agencies within the title field. All of the "Documerica" series photos were created by US EPA, and the license tag for these should be "PD-USGov-EPA". Some of the photos take by EPA photographers show facilities or activities conducted by other US Government agencies, and these agencies are sometimes referred to in the title field. For example, US Coast Guard is mentioned in this file: File:AERIAL VIEW OF A FIVE ACRE POND NEAR OGDEN, UTAH, THAT CONTAINED ACID WATER, OIL, ACID CLAY SLUDGE, CARS, DEAD... - NARA - 555844.jpg. EPA added as a first filter, this should ensure that license takes priority. I have added a check on edit histories, so if Faebot's edits are undone on any file, there will not be a second attempt at relicensing. Though I have a copy on Github, it's not synched with my local files. I just paste a version there as a public archive. I had a quick look at Jasonanaggie, but I'm unsure what would be needed. It would be relatively easy to point the code at a different sort category, but the assumption is that identical license templates would be on each file to be replaced. Ok. First off, I just noticed that "uscourts.gov" entry looks wrong. Second, here is the link to patch 6. You've got duplicates for a lot of the National Parks and you are missing the National Parks website, the Army's Flickr account, Images from USAID Africa, 11 Army Corps of Engineers accounts, the Office of Naval Research, and the DVIDSHUB Flickr account. Copernicus images[edit]

Thank you for the wonderful initiative of automatically uploading the Copernicus Sentinel images from ESA. I really appreciate it. I'd like to suggest some improvements, if you don't mind.

  • Categorize each image by the satellite the data originates from. You already have that information available in a straightforward format in the "mission" field. Simply apply the following mappings:
  • If the words "Interferometry", "Earthquakes", "InSAR", "deformation" or "subsidence" appear in the keywords or the text, then add Category:Interferometric synthetic aperture radar to the image.
  • Perhaps also add the permission line in the "Permission" field to the CC-BY-SA template, since the Copernicus Program requests that a quite specific attribution is used [41]. Maybe also add the {{Attribution-Copernicus}} license tag? It seems the restrictions in the cited legislation are all covered by the Creative Commons license, though, so I'm not sure if that's necessary.
  • A bit more complicated, but a relevant Category:Satellite pictures of X could be added based on the "Location" field. —Quibik (talk) 16:48, 6 May 2017 (UTC)
I'll take a look longer term. The initial upload is only a couple of hundred files, which is tiny for me and it's a size that can be easily modified using VFC. If the same script is used to upload thousands of more files, then some more sophisticated categorization can be added in based on any of the ESA tag data, however this may be a much wider selection of potential images than the Sentinel collection. --Fæ (talk) 22:31, 6 May 2017 (UTC)

Yes that is interesting, thanks. I'm reading up on it, taking care to first understand their workflow. I'm think that a minimum of 600px wide would suit Commons. I'm also interested in ECCO, but that's something to park to one side due to the contractual arrangements, even though there can be no copyright problem.
Starting an initial run, results mostly under Category:Fleurons by year. Min height 25px, min width 600px.

Would you please put the uploaded files in the most specific categories you can manage? For instance, if the description clearly mentions a town or city, then the file should go straight into the category for this place, and not just into the one for the county or country.
