Behavioural context[edit]
Hi, thanks for this amazing picture File:Pied_kingfisher_(Ceryle_rudis_rudis)_female_eating_chick.jpg! Would you know what the chick is of, the same species? might be of use in some animal behaviour related article if the context is clearly understood. Shyamal L. (talk) 14:29, 7 January 2017 (UTC)
- I don't know for sure @Shyamal:. There were no other species around yet about 300 pied kingfishers nesting in the same area, so I make that 90%+ sure. I've researched the net and cannot find any mention of cannibalism for kingfishers. I didn't capture any swallowing, so I thought it was possible the bird is playing with the chick, but my wife saw the bird being swallowed. I'd love to know more, as would our guide - it was new to him. Charles (talk) 14:41, 7 January 2017 (UTC)

- Hi - can you give me an example please of where I am going wrong. Charles (talk) 11:48, 31 January 2017 (UTC)
- Your files in Category:Birds of Gambia. --Steinsplitter (talk) 11:50, 31 January 2017 (UTC)
- I completely disagree. I do use sub-categories and am an experienced user on Commons. The sub-categories you advocate have been created by one user and are not helpful to the Community:
- Your files in Category:Birds of Gambia. --Steinsplitter (talk) 11:50, 31 January 2017 (UTC)
They are not consistent with other bird categories on Commons
The most appropriate sub-categories for animals are sub-species, not countries or behavior related such as ... in flight
As an example, the user who created these sub-categories has removed useful categories Category:Ceryle rudis rudis and Category:Birds of Gambia from my image File:Pied kingfisher (Ceryle rudis rudis) eating fish.jpg and replaced them with Category:Ceryle rudis in Gambia and Category:2016 photographs of Gambia - I am happy to take this dispute to arbitration at any time. - Please keep the discussion here, where it has been started. (standard practice). @Atamari: complained about your categorizing of stuff and asked me to ask you to categorize them bather. Since you are not following standard practice, and moving the discussions to other places i haven't noticed that you replyed to him yet. I thought you ignored him, otherwise i wouldn't have posted here. However, Atamari is free to bring the case to AN/U per COM:DISPUTE. --Steinsplitter (talk) 12:26, 31 January 2017 (UTC)

Insect ID[edit]
Hi, you got a lot of nice wildlife pictures online. Yet I think there might be some misidentified insects among them.
- File:Daffodil_fly_(Norellia_spinipes).jpg -> Sciomyzidae. With these red and white legs it looks like Dichetophora obliterata.
- File:Digger_Wasp_(Cerceris_arenaria).jpg -> Nomada male, probably N. goodeniana
- Agree Nomada, but not goodeniana
-
- There are many similar species indeed.
- File:Ichneumon_wasp_(Echthrus_reluctator)_female.jpg -> Probably Lissonota lineolaris or something similar? The Ichneumonidae are notoriously difficult.
- Agree not this species.
- File:Meadow_grasshopper_(Chorthippus_parallelus)_female_green_form.jpg -> Might be correct, but check for Pseudochorthippus montanus and Chorthippus albomarginatus. I think they might fit even better.
- nymph of Chorthippus_parallelus?
-
- I don't think this is a nymph. Actually the typical P. parallelus female has even shorter wings while the typical C. albomarginatus female has longer wings. This one would fit very well to the typical P. montanus. Unfortunatly the Wing length might be variable and can't be used for a confident ID. On second look I couldn't find any evidence for P. montanus living in Great Britain. This makes him rather improbable. I guess you were right all the time.
- File:Grey bush-cricket (Platycleis albopunctata) male.jpg -> check for Metrioptera roeselii. The sourroundings look rather green for Platycleis albopunctata.
- yes; Metrioptera roeselii nymph
- File:Tachinid fly (Peleteria varia).jpg -> probably also Tachina fera. Peleteria should have dark legs shouldn't they?
- Not sure about Tachina fera. Does this view help File:Tachinid fly (Peleteria varia) dorsal.jpg?
-
- Still looks more like Tachina fera check out the Images on diptera.info all the Peleterias there have dark legs. Tachina fera has light coloured legs. Another similar tachinid is Winthemia bohemani yet they also have darker legs than Tachina fera. As far as I know Peleteria varia is typically more reddish on the abdomen than the other two. I unfortunately don't know how variable the colouration of Peleteria varia is.
I hope this helps to improve the already fine collection. Regards --Aiwok (talk) 17:06, 31 January 2017 (UTC) Very helpful: will check these out soon(ish)! Charles (talk) 17:07, 31 January 2017 (UTC)
- you may be right on all of them @Aiwok:, but could you have a look at my comments above. Many thanks again. Charles (talk) 14:48, 2 February 2017 (UTC)
