![]() Member Posts: 92 ![]() ![]() ![]() Location: Wigan, NorthWest | Are the 3 layers joined on the proper one? I purchased what i was told was a triple layer head gasket for one of my cars last year. when i came to fit it there wer 2 black pieces and 1 silver metal in the middle. I enquired at a local garage and was told the 2 black layers ,that wernt joined to the metal one but had the same holes, were for packaging puposes to protect the gasket from damage in storage and to only fit the silver gasket. I did this but later last year was told 2 different stories, 1 saying that these should be fitted for a better seal and 1 saying that it was a saver gasket and the black layer was for if you needed a skim? both sound like bo#ox 2 me, is any of it true? The gasket worked fine nywa n is still going strong! Was it just a cheap variant or is this what they are like?

![]() Member Posts: 92 ![]() ![]() ![]() Location: Wigan, NorthWest | The metal layer has compressable rings around the bores and edges where the older version had the red/orange rubber stuff. The black layers wernt attatched to the gasket itself, just loose inside the packet, or is this how they are meant to be? I assumed that if they were meant to be fitted they would be attatched, maybe its because i got the head skimmed its worked? If i bump into the new owner i will ask if they hav had any problems, the last time i looked (over 6 months after fitting) it was fine and this car got and still gets thrashed most days. Could it be a different variation of the gasket or have i just been lucky?

![]() Regular Posts: 107 ![]() Location: Folkestone, Kent | when the head gasket went on my vvc i had it skimmed got a multi layer gasket and put all three layers in. still going strong even after some very hard driving. seems obvious that they should all be fitted as the bubble wrap is probably the thing protecting the gasket from damage

Regular Posts: 113 ![]() | Here's a new MLS gasket I removed from an old 1.8 engine: ![]() It was boiling coolant, but the HG was fine. The block was cracked. Here's the old HG, showing the flexible bead - this hadn't gone, but I changed it when I bent a valve. ![]()
