I'd have one of those 1.8 K-series ones like the Talon, I saw it lapping Donington a couple of weeks ago, seems to go OK for a Metro

Location: High Peak Derbyshire		It has a rather worn MED 1380 in at the moment, I'm sure it's a two stroke, it uses gallons of oil, so off the road at the moment, I might just stick a spare 1275 in for now.
No idea on a 1/4 mile time, not really that quick, 0-60 used to be about 8.5 secs, some owners have managed to fit the K-series engine and subframe, but it isn't an easy job.
It looks a lot faster than it really is, resonable top speed though due to better aerodynamics than a metro.

Its better than some of the things we have had said about metros.. For me the best thing to do with a metro is to step away... and leave the cheque book at home..   lol

Nice car though but not my cup of tea... but each to their own..( but  I am now happy driving around in my escort or pajero..   )

Location: High Peak Derbyshire		Hello everyone, It's front wheel drive, It's almost as heavy as a Metro too, a very strong shell, I think a side impact is the one I'd fear most.

I had a ride in three Midas cars at the weekend, two of them were full hydro-gas, one felt awful, and the other really really nice, I'm surprised at how good a well set-up hyrdo car can be, the third had springs front and rear and was a bit poor to be honest, too much damping on the front and too soft and low on the back, for fans of hydro-gas that was the car that turned out to be the best.

My ideal Metro would be a White Mk2 turbo but with K-series running gear.

i have no idea how hard it would be to do on a midas cause i dotn know anything about them, the main problem is they are bigger! the subframe on k series tros is bigger to so it will not fit inside the crossmember, infact will not even fit inside the front valence!

as far as a series engines being out of date, they are old but i think theya re still good little engines, can you throw a 285 cam in a k series engine and just tune it up and off you go?? no you cant! to do it properly you need a full new injection system costing £2000 or what ever, with the a series u can get a new carb needle for £8! i spent about 4 years fafing about with the a series engine and they are great engines to learn on and very hard to break engines!

there are few threads on my car in the technical section and i can no more be botherd to find them then u can!! when you learn to respect metros i will find them for you

Location: High Peak Derbyshire		Well spotted, they are indeed Cavalier lights, I agree the A-series has great character and performs very well considering how old it is, but I want five gears and fuel-injection.

Edit What's the oil consumption like on your MED 1380 and how many miles have you done? mine's an MED 1380 too.

You've lost a bit there, are you asking me about the oil consumption on my 1380?

Edit, see what you mean now, I asked you the question a while ago, my engine used one pint of oil every 250 miles, but it had done around 60k miles which I'm told is a lot for a 1380.
So did yours use any oil, I have no idea how good mine was when new because I bought it with 50k

Location: High Peak Derbyshire		Yes a K would be lighter, if I put a K in I'd really need to move the engine towards the near-side, so I'd still need new drive-shafts with a K, why did Rover put them so far over to the drivers side? the problem I have is the headlights getting in the way.
The 16 valve version of that GM engine kicks out 160 hp with a set of throttle bodies, it's also a very simple engine compared to the K, old school if you like and you can get a whole Astra with that engine in for very little money, just a shame throttle bodies are so expensive.

Location: Sible Hedingham, Essex		Ah. I have had experience of the Alfa engine and from the front pulley to the driveshafts it is quite a distance.
Transverse is shorter, but wishbone length becomes an issue. Unless you go trailing wishbone like the Libra.
Of course you could put the engine further back and the gearbox in front. You'd need a step-off though. Then you might as well go 4WD.

Oh and I think Metros are far more distinctive and rarer than minis.

Location: High Peak Derbyshire		Somebody has managed to squeeze a single cam K-series in, but it's tight! hence the Vauxhall engine, someone else I know is hoping to do it first, I'll wait and see how he gets on.

I took the rear-subframe off yesterday, the pressure reducing valve was leaking and the only way to get at it was to remove the sub-frame, bugger!

no offecnce to him but i dont think this guy was the best engineer/mechanic but he definatly had the right ideas, he moved engine mounts an stuff to give himself more room for radiator etc. an this is the kind of mods u would want to do, moving the engine towards the middle is not great cause the drivers side drive shaft is already much longer then the passenger side but this may help, moving it back would surely give u more room.

when i built my car i considerd vauxhall engines, my first impression was that they where much better, more reliable, easy to get more power, easy to get hold of and what not.

this was a silly un experienced opinion tho! the k series is lighter, easyer to get power from (160bhp already available) and easyer to fit, woring was easy and speedo drive etc would work with current dials (but i used gti dials anyway). so k series added up to be much better!

altho u may be set in the vauxhall engine now one way would be to get a pic of my engine and a pic of standard A series metro engine and compair where the k series cam cover would be in your car??

Here's a photo of Graham's oranage clubman with the K-series subframe and a green mini noisymini's with his home-made mini subframe with the engine positioned more centrally.

Location: High Peak Derbyshire		Some very smart minis on his site, thanks Mark. Up to now I don't think anyone has put an XE in a metro frame, I now see why Rover had to make the subframe much longer and the track further forward when they put the K-series in.

Location: High Peak Derbyshire		For sure, it's a little flexible at the moment, will run a box section along the bottom and brace the tower to the front, nothing too big, 25mm square will be more than enough.

if you dont mind me popping in with a suggestion i think your idea of midas/metro is wicked with an xe engine but its to much weight at the front ive driven a mini/nova/and a corsa all with the xe lump fitted yer they are quick but the handling suffered badly because the lump were to heavy as an alternative i would use the 1600 16v corsa gsi engine for one it has a smaller block and would fit into your bay better and these are easily tunable to over 200bhp and dont suffer the pourous head of the xe unless you get as coscast xe plus the corsa engine is about 30% lighter ive always liked vx lumps and i really like your midas all the best alex

Location: High Peak Derbyshire		Thanks Alex, You're right the 1.6 would be more suitable and if it wasn't for the fact I already have the C20XE I'd be looking for a 16XE. I've now decided to just fit the C16 engine, at the moment I really don't have the money to kit out the 2.0 with all the right bits. I have everything for the 1.6,standard fuel-injection and ECU etc, it is now looking like it is going to go in with no body mods at all. Yesterday I was comparing a K frame to my frame and I have to say mine looks much more compact and neater, the K frame is massive in comparison.

I believe the midas weighs around 720 kg in standard trim, I'm hoping for around 110 hp from the 1.6, so I should have 152 bhp per ton, at the end of the day I'm only really looking for a resonably fast and economical car, I think I'll end up with a well rounded package, my days of tearing around racing everything in sight are almost behind me now and with petrol the price it is today we all need something reasonably economical.

All the best, hoping to make a bit of progress this week.

Location: High Peak Derbyshire		Yes I guess so, haven't a clue what it is worth, do you have any ideas? stage 3 MED head, 1.5 ratio roller rockers, cross pin diff, 3.1 diff.
I have 2 other 1275 MG metro engines too, taking up room, one is standard 3.44 diff, the other has a 2.9 diff in, both done around 80k miles.
